Degradation of chlorinated and hydroxylated intermediates in UVA/ClO2 systems: A chlorine-based advanced oxidation process investigation

The chlorination used in water treatment plants can promote the formation of toxic compounds, which be minimized by substituting free available chlorine (FAC) with dioxide (ClO2). Besides disinfection, combining ClO2 UV radiation leads to efficient elimination organic substances. This work employed a lab-made reactor equipped LEDs emitting at 367 nm adjustable photon flux investigate efficiency UVA/ClO2 process and hydroxylated chlorinated products during degradation phenol coumarin. coumarin was investigated central composite design depended on concentration pH. Increasing necessary degradation. In higher ClO2/phenol ratios, 80% total phenolic compounds were removed pH 3, 5.5, 8. mineralization increased pH, along indicating these are more persistent than ones. advantageous removing mineralizing if compared direct oxidation, but needs improved minimize products, ClO2- ClO3- requires post-treatment method.
